For Graduate Students

grad-student-abroad-head

Graduate students — both master's, doctoral, and post-doctoral — have the ability to study abroad while at UTSA. The College of Business, the College of Education & Human Development, and the College of Liberal & Fine Arts all offer summer programs that are open to graduate students. Doctoral students doing international research are encouraged to apply for the IRS courses available year-round for those working on dissertation research.

All graduate students must register with Education Abroad Services and complete all required elements of their specific program before leaving San Antonio.

Benefits of Doing Graduate Work Abroad

  • Program durations may be shorter than equivalent U.S. programs; many MA or MS programs take as little as 18 months when students are enrolled full time.

  • Many countries allow students enrolled in a degree program to work part-time, such as the United Kingdom and Australia.

  • Many foreign institutions have a U.S. federal FAFSA number and can process U.S. federal aid including Stafford Loans for graduate students (inquire with individual universities).

  • The perspective of studying an academic discipline in the context of another academic system and culture can be beneficial.

  • Particularly for students interested in a discipline with an international or language focus, such as international business, the international degree will have professional advantages.

  • The length of the program and nature of graduate work often offer a unique cultural immersion opportunity.

  • Graduate programs offer all of the benefits and experiences of living abroad.

  • An international learning experience is life-changing! Build your resume by studying a language, conducting research abroad, or doing an international internship related to your academic program. You may also choose to travel with a faculty member for credit or spend a semester taking courses abroad.

  • Many students organize their own international experiences through personal and professional contacts. Whether you choose to plan it yourself or participate in an organized program, the Education Abroad advising staff can assist you.

Some Important Factors to Consider

  • Degree recognition in the U.S. or the country in which the student intends to establish a career: professions such as law, medicine, or education may have specific curricular or licensure requirements that prohibit their international equivalencies from being recognized for careers in the United States.

  • Academic “style” of the program: U.S. degree programs tend to be coursework based, while many programs in other countries may be purely research based and therefore dramatically different than the student is used to.

  • Because there are relatively few “programs” that administrate or assist students with the application process, the logistics may be more challenging and students need to be prepared to navigate the application and matriculation process independently.

  • Degrees in non-English speaking cultures will likely require a high level of proficiency, as graduate programs are not usually designed for non-native speakers.
