SIT Study Abroad Senegal: Hip Hop, Resilience & Black Struggles (Summer)

Examine how young Africans use hip-hop to question traditional representations of Africa, imagine the continent’s future, and raise consciousness of globalization and (in)equality.

WHY STUDY HIP-HOP IN AFRICA?

Hip-hop artists in West Africa are challenging Eurocentric understandings of the world and redefining Africa from a decolonial perspective. In Senegal, one of the most innovative countries in Africa, you’ll engage with hip-hop artists, activists, and influencers to learn how they critique traditional understandings of Africa and African-descended peoples, imagine African futures, and raise consciousness about globalization and (in)equality. You will have the chance to study, engage, and perform with international hip-hop artists and activists such as Docta, Ndongo D, Xeinnix, and Salla Ngary.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Explore hip-hop as a philosophical, political, and economic force in Africa
  • Attend workshops led by major hip-hop artist like King Mo, Ndongo D, and Xeinnix.
  • Learn how African youth shape and are shaped by globalization.
  • Spend two weeks in Ghana experiencing hip life, a unique version of hip-hop.
  • Study with Senegalese students.

MONEY MATTERS

Be sure to discuss how study abroad costs are handled at your school with your study abroad advisor.  

SIT tuition and room and board fees include the following:
  • Cost of all lecturers who provide instruction to students in:
    • African Urban Hip-hop and Decolonial Futures
    • Rethinking Africa and the African Diaspora
  • All educational excursions to locations such as Saint Louis, Pikine, Guediawaye, and Yarakh, including all related travel costs
  • Accident and illness insurance throughout the entire program period
  • All accommodations during the entire program period. This includes during orientation, time in the program base (Dakar), on all excursions, and during the final evaluation period.
  • Homestay (six weeks in Dakar)
  • All meals for the entire program period. Meals are covered by SIT Study Abroad directly, through a stipend, or through the homestay.

SCHOLARSHIPS
  • SIT awards nearly $1.6 million in scholarships and grants annually.
  • All scholarships and grants are need-based.
  • Awards generally range from $500 to $3,000 for summer programs.  
  • Contact the financial aid and/or study abroad office(s) at your college or university to learn if your school’s scholarships and grants and federal and state aid programs can be applied to an SIT Study Abroad program.
