Three weeks of experiential learning in the host city of Rabat, Morocco: Across the centuries, Morocco has seen influences from African, European, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern civilizations, including a time under French colonial rule. Because of this melting pot of societies, beliefs and feelings across a multitude of topics range widely. Unravel these debates during the three week Rabat: June Short-Term program.
Students follow one English-taught course with site visits across the city and knowledgeable guest speakers incorporated into class time. Receive a crash course in the Moroccan Arabic dialect of Darija, live with a local host family in the medina and take part in a variety of cultural activities and events.

Enroll in one course from the following:
- Language, Identity and Nationalism in Contemporary Morocco: Explore the cultural and linguistic diversity of Morocco where a variety of Arabic and Berber dialects, French, and standardized Arabic are spoken as well as more recently, English. What are the attitudes of Moroccans towards various languages, how does gender shape language use, and does choice of a language partake in the construction of social classes?
- Postcolonial History of the Maghreb: Issues and Debates: What did the transition from a colonial state to postcolonial state look like and what did it mean to Moroccans? Examine the historical overview, past and current relations between Morocco and France, and how literature has played an important role in voicing the questions and feelings of the Moroccan people during this time period.
- Social Movements in the Middle East and North Africa: Organized social movements can serve as the catalyst for speedier social change. Dig into the demographics of who is likely to participate in social movements, the tools they use such as social media, and recent movements in Morocco and the larger MENA region.
Each course incorporates site visits, guest speakers, and field trips for a hands-on learning experience. All courses are taught in English and receive four credits. Access the syllabi on our website.

Connect and live with a local host family for a greater understanding of the Moroccan culture and lifestyle.
Each student is paired with a host family in the historic city center known as the medina. Students are provided with a private bedroom with linens, access to common areas including the kitchen, all meals and weekly laundry. All homestays are vetted to provide the best fit.
Eligibility
The program is open to students with freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate level class standing and a minimum 3.0 GPA.
