Terrorism & Security

Seek to better understand why terrorism occurs, how terrorists organize and operate, and what some of the consequences are of reacting in different ways to terrorism. It is both relevant and important to study terrorism from a European perspective, as several European countries have a very long and unfortunate history of dealing with terrorism such as Northern Ireland and the IRA, Spain and the ETA, Italy and the Red Brigades, Germany and the Red Army Faction, and Russia and The People’s Will and The Black Widows.

Core Course

Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism from a European Perspective
Fall/Spring, 3 Credits

This course is a study of terrorism – its causes and aims as well as its forms – and of counter-terrorism measures introduced by the international community and individual states. The course examines the implications of terrorism for international politics in the 21st century. Adopting a European perspective allows us to better understand the history, concept, and phenomenon of terrorism and the varied attempts to fight it.

Core Course Study Tours

This program travels on Study Tours to the following destinations:

  • Week-Long Study Tour: Belfast-Dublin or London-Oslo

  • Core Course Week: Denmark or Northern Germany

Early in the semester, you delve into your academic focus during Core Course Week, in which you travel on a short Study Tour for three days in Denmark or a neighboring country, combined with a two-day seminar in Copenhagen. Later in the semester, you travel again with your Core Course on a week-long Study Tour in Europe.

While on tour, theories learned in the classroom come to life by meeting with professionals and experts in your field who contribute to furthering your understanding of course topics. Study Tours are hands-on and experiential, combining theory with practice, and expose you to additional cultural perspectives. You have the opportunity to visit sites and experts in your field of interest that you may not otherwise have access to.
